This homemade cowboy candy, candied jalapenos recipe is super easy and perfect for dessert or snack. It's the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. It's basically shredded jalapenos soaked in a seasoned simple syrup, and is ideal for adding to cocktails, cornbread, cupcakes, or in guacamole.

Today I'm making a homemade cowboy candy recipe! I love DIY cowboy candy, aka candied jalapenos. They're sweet and tangy, and I could eat the whole jar in one go.

A classic recipe, and a great way to preserve your summer jalapenos harvest.

You can store them in the cupboard in the bath, or as the recipe card says, they're easy to store in the fridge for a few months.

What is cowboy candy?

Cowboy candy is another name for candied jalapenos, which are essentially diced jalapenos sweetly simmered in a seasoned simple syrup.

It's the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, making it a great quick sweet snack or side dish. The waterfall method also helps preserve it.

The term is centuries old, but the recipe is so popular that a small company has trademarked the moniker. This homemade version is far better. Homemade is better, right? And it's super easy!

Why buy it when you can make it so easily at home?

So, let's explain how to make cowboy candy.

Ingredients for homemade cowboy candy (candied jalapenos)

To make cowboy candy (candied jalapenos), you will need the following ingredients:

  • Jalapeno peppers
  • Jalapeno peppers
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Cinnamon jelly beans

I use chili powder, turmeric, ginger, etc. Use whatever you like. Celery seed and garlic powder are popular.

How to Make Cowboy Candy (Candied Jalapenos) - Recipe Directions

First, slice the jalapenos into 1/4 inch rounds. You can remove the seeds if you like, but I make them without shaking. If you're not good with chili peppers, it's a good idea to wear gloves.

In a saucepan or large container, combine the sugar, vinegar, and seasonings.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes syrup-like.

Add the sliced ​​jalapeno peppers and mix until evenly coated with the syrup.

Reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes. Add the hot pepper slices, they will darken slightly as they absorb the sugar.

Put the candied jalapenos into a cleaned jar and fill the jar with the remaining syrup. Spoon the peppers in and immediately pour in the boiling syrup.

You can let them cool a little first if you like.

Wipe the rim of the jar, cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

Remaining Jalapeno Marshmallow Syrup

Save any syrup you have left over. Use it to make your own cocktails or spicy mocktails. So yummy! Also on cupcakes and potato salad. Get creative!

Candied Jalapenos

I like to snack on candied jalapenos as is. They make a great garnish, too. Spread it on top of your favorite cornbread, cupcakes, or pie.

Great against cream cheese. Spread cream cheese on crackers and top with marshmallow jalapenos. Amazingly tasty. Mix into a cream cheese bowl for jalapeno cream cheese dip.

Add it to a cocktail. How about a margarita? Chop and mix into your favorite guacamole recipe for a slightly sweeter flavor.

Top burgers or hot dogs. Candied jalapenos are so many ways to eat them!

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • This is a surprisingly popular recipe. It's so tasty. If any questions come up, I'll post them here. Here are some additional tips that might help:
  • Wear gloves: Hot peppers can irritate and burn the skin. Some people are sensitive to them. When handling hot peppers, especially when cutting them, the oils from the hot peppers can get on your skin. It's best to wear gloves when handling hot peppers.   • Cut the jalapenos: You'll be cutting a lot of jalapenos for this recipe. Using a mandolin or food processor will cut down on cutting time.

Remove the seeds and pulp: If you're concerned about the overall heat, you can remove them before slicing the jalapenos. Most of the heat is in the peppers.

Halapeno's sugar pickles are held in the refrigerator for about 3 months without processing. If you put it in a canned bottle and treat it in a bath, you can easily hold it on a cupboard until you are ready to open it.

Can this recipe be made with other peppers?

Of course. Any kind of pepper can be "candy". Just slice it and make it according to the recipe. Some peppers are clearly larger than others. Cut such things small.

This process goes well with pepper. I personally love the sugar pickles of Habanero.

Sugar pickles and any pepper in Harapeno are not as spicy as expected because the spiciness is quite mixed in the waterfall process.

Way of making

First, cut the Harapeno into 1/4 inch slices.

Put sugar, vinegar and spices in a pan and mix. After boiling, lower heat and boil until the sugar melts and becomes syrup.

Add the slice of the Harapeno Pepper and stir so that the syrup is evenly applied.

Boil for about 4 minutes. If you boil a little and absorb sugar, the color will be a little darker.

Transfer the suga r-picked harapeno to a neatly washed bottle and pack the remaining syrup in a bottle.

Cover and store in the refrigerator for 3 months. You can eat it immediately, but it's best to mature the taste in the refrigerator for at least a week before eating.

How to preserve

First, use a steam rack in a 1 6-liter pot to clean the bottle and lid. Place the bottle on the rack and put the water on the pan. Since the bottle may break due to heat, make sure that the bottle does not touch the bottom of the pot.

Boil the water and boil the bottle for 10 minutes. When you are ready to use, take out the bottle with the tongs. Prepare the suga r-pickled harapeno according to the above procedure.

When you are ready for the sugar pickled Harapeno, leave the 1/ 4-inch head space and pour into the bottle.

Clean the lid with soap and lukewarm water and place it on the bottle. Fix the lid with a ring for canned washing. Clean the edge.

Return the filled bottle to the grilled water bath of the steamer and confirm that the bottle is covered with 3 inch water.

Boil the hot water again and process it for 10 minutes. If the altitude is high, take another 10 minutes. Take out the bottle with the tongs and tighten the screw cap.

The lid of the bottle should make a sound when it is sealed. If the lid cannot be sealed for any reason, r e-process or save in the refrigerator.

Use the bottle upside down to check for liquid leakage. 10 minutes later, the bottle is turned vertically and cooled.

The bottle is stored in a cool and dry place. Having this method for more than a year. After opening, store in the refrigerator.

  • I love this! Cowboy caramel on cream cheese bread makes a great breakfast. Candied habaneros are even better. I agree with Mike, the sweetness helps to counter the heat.   • I make it all the time! I love it! I put it on everything! I actually made it a little differently. I cut a lot to put on the burgers instead of rings. Hope it works. I can make at least 10 jars a season. It's the only plant in my garden!
