7 Skills You Need for Network Marketing
True Story: Losing in 6th Grade Football Taught Me How to Succeed
In 6th grade, I played football for the Cowboys in a little league in Lubbock, Texas. Our coach was incredibly smart. He had played football in college and was a real student of football.
Double backs, double passes, fake punts, fake hits, fake backs, fake lateral hits, and more. We spent hours trying to master these tricks and as kids, we were so excited to learn them.
We were truly a force to be reckoned with. If I remember correctly, we won every game and made it to the playoffs. We won our first two games and got to play the Panthers. The Panthers were undefeated and our coach, who was a great coach, blew them away to learn their offensive scheme.
As we prepared for the big game, the thing that got our coach excited was that he said we were the most fundamentally sound team he had ever seen.
They only did 5 or 6 plays (we did dozens), no trick plays, no fake snaps. For those of you who don't know American football, it's when the offense baits the defense into going offside (taking a penalty) by not hiking the ball when the general says "hat." Sometimes the general will say "hat" two, three, four times before the ball is cut off. The Panthers' general would just say "set, set, go" and take the ball out each time.
I was a middle linebacker and I thought I just had to prepare for the 5 or 6 plays they would repeat over and over again. I remember wondering how they could go undefeated with such basics.
Until the first quarter was over and we were down 21-0.
It was true that they did the plays over and over again. But it would be damned if they didn't execute them perfectly every time. I've never been more disappointed in any game. We basically knew what was going to happen, but they were so strong, so fast, and so perfect at blocking that we just couldn't stop them.
The game didn't get much better after that. They crushed us, and I've erased the last goal from my memory.
Their manager had a completely different philosophy than ours. Instead of emphasizing flashy tactics and gimmicks, he coached them to focus more relentlessly on the fundamentals than any team in the league. Whereas we were "good" at dozens of plays, they "mastered" only a few.
What is the moral of the story?
